Nutrition – Tasting the future you (the N in AH NEW START)

The 70% Rule

Growing up, my dad used to say something along these lines: “if you can control what goes through your mouth, 70% of your life’s potential problems are solved”. Wild assertion? Maybe, but it has proven to be true so far. The very idea that what goes through our mouths has a profound effect on  our lives is essentially a scientific fact. We become what we eat or drink.

From the start, I admit that nutrition, the N in AH NEW START, is a very, very broad topic. I admit that. I am convinced that any attempt on my part to cover it all – even in summary – will end in an unbalanced or incomplete view. So, I won’t try that. What I will try though is present some principles that I think need re-echoing in our present day – and then leave the specifics for now. I feel it is more realistic (and perhaps wiser) to share specifics balanced and tailored to those who require my personalized coaching services.

AH NEW START Nutrition Principles

As such, here are seven general nutrition principles, backed by science and based on facts, that I think we all need to know:

1.      Fruits, vegetables, grains, and nuts should ever remain the mainstay of diet.

2.      Your diet should be deficient of or low in free sugar, saturated/trans fat, red meat, and processed meat.

3.      Aim for a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 18.5kg/m2 – 24.9kg/m2, the range with the least risk of acquiring disease.

4.      If you ever choose to count your calories, ensure you are super-strict with it and read the labels very carefully. This ideally works best with regular exercise.

5.      Avoid alcohol and tobacco.

6.      Don’t smoke anything.

7.      Avoid caffeine.

Tough points? Lots of talking points? A lot of people might challenge some of these? I don’t doubt it, but as a health coach and a Canadian physician I must give you the facts as they are. These are general principles, which in practice can be modified based on your individual situation or circumstances. That’s where I come in.

I hope I have helped. I honestly do. Should you need more information on nutrition, check out my other posts or click here to set up a session with me. Remember, what you are tasting is what makes up the future you.
